Sockets, Switches and New Circuits

A new appliance, a rearranged room or a new work area usually needs extra sockets and circuits. Rather than working around it with extension leads, we run permanent cabling sized for the actual load.

What this service covers

  • Additional socket and switch installation
  • Relocating sockets and switches

Frequently Asked Questions

Why add a socket instead of using an extension lead?

Extension leads draw more current than they are rated for with high-power appliances such as air conditioning, heaters and ovens, and they heat up. A permanent circuit is sized for the load and gets its own breaker. It is safer and it looks tidier.

Does moving a socket damage the wall badly?

A buried cable run means cutting a narrow channel that is then re-plastered - it needs repainting but causes no structural damage. Where you would rather not open the wall, surface trunking is a practical alternative.

Does air conditioning need its own circuit?

Yes, we recommend it. Air conditioning draws high current and, added to an existing socket circuit, causes that breaker to trip repeatedly. A dedicated circuit with its own breaker is better for both the unit and the installation.
